Dear Colleagues;

I am delighted to be able to inform readers on the ODG that our colleague and fellow list member Emeritus Professor Harold Luntz was honoured in another list recently, in the recent Australia Day 2019 honours list, by being appointed by the Governor-General as an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

ODG members need no introduction to Harold’s distinguished career as one of Australia’s top Torts scholars. The citation was:

“For distinguished service to legal education, as an academic and editor, to professional development, and to the community”.

Harold’s previous service has included, at Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne: Emeritus Professor, since 2008; George Paton Chair of Law, 1976-2002; Professorial Fellow, 2003-2007; Dean, Faculty of Law, 1986-1988. On the Torts Law Journal he was founder and General Editor, 1993-2012, and is a current member of the Editorial Board.

His other positions have included:

  • Deputy Chair, Seafarers Rehabilitation and Compensation Authority, 1993-1998.
  • Part-Time Senior Member, Workcare Appeals Board Victoria, 1990-1992.
  • Secretary, Victorian Chief Justice's Law Reform Committee, 1967-1984.
  • Visiting Professor, University of California, Berkeley, 1971.
  • Visiting Associate Professor, Queens University, Ontario Canada, 1970.
  • Former Doctoral Examiner, University of Cambridge.

His previous Awards and recognition include:

  • Recipient, John G Fleming Memorial Award for Torts Scholarship, 2000.
  • Recipient, AILA Insurance Law Prize, 2003.
  • Recipient, Doctor of Laws, University of Melbourne, 1983.

I am personally very grateful for Harold’s mentoring and friendship after his kind invitation for me to join the team on the last few editions of the textbook that will always be known as “Luntz & Hambly”, and for the example he has set me of precision and clarity in legal writing, as well as challenges to keep on keeping in mind the impact of academic tort law on the lives of individual litigants.

Warm regards

Neil
